“The Earth has retreated. Mankind has retreated, everywhere but on the Moon. The Lunar colony is man’s frontier not just physically, but psychologically, too. Here is a world that doesn’t have a web of life to disrupt; that doesn’t have a complex environment in delicate balance to upset. … On the Moon there is no past to long for or dream about. There is no direction but forward.” – some Asimov story
One Year…
Been a year since I’ve left Xanga. I can’t believe it’s ONLY been a year….

Blue Like Jazz
“I never liked jazz music because jazz music doesn’t resolve. But I was outside the Bagdad Theater in Portland one night when I saw a man playing the saxophone. I stood there for fifteen minutes, and he never opened his eyes.
After that I liked jazz music.
Sometimes you have to watch somebody love something before you can love it yourself. It is as if they are showing you the way.
I used to not like God because God didn’t resolve. But that was before any of this happened.”
~ Author’s Note, introduction to Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller
This is not God’s love
A week ago I went to a friend’s birthday party, all Christians.. An hour or so past midnight, in Chinatown, we were ready to go home. As we stood on the street corner, discussing rides and wrapping up conversations a homeless man came near and asked “Spare change?” We kept talking, ignoring him. None of us acknowledged his existence even once. It was awkward, he kept repeating “Spare change?” as we continued to talk, and continued to ignore him. In the lull between thoughts, I desperately tried to fill the awkward silence so we wouldn’t have to face the homeless man. We looked away from him down the street where we waited for friends to drive their cars over.
All I could think of at the time was this is not God’s love.
I keep strange hours. In my defense, I just dropped my parents off at the airport. So now it’s two weeks of…. whatever the heck I want. My own dishes, my own dinner, my own laundry… oh, and we still hafta plan Europe ’09…..
Respect
is contagious.
And I haven’t eaten dinner at home for three days.
And, for the first time, I actually spent some time outside work with a co-worker.
And Seattle has no nightlife. Everything closes so early….. =P
Awesome Day
I had an awesome day today. It started out pretty normal, PSALT in the morning then a few hours of gaming….
Then we went to the Video Games Live concert at Paramount at 8:00pm. It was AWESOME!!! Some songs that stuck out were Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, and Castlevania. This one CRAZY dude, Martin Leung, also played some AMAZING piano arrangements of Mario and Final Fantasy. He got popular on the internet with a video of him playing the Super Mario Bros theme blindfolded. He played this awesome Final Fantasy medley, and some crazy super-fast Mario one I’ll put on Facebook. I wasn’t aware human fingers could move so fast.
Afterwards we played some of the greatest games of Brawl ever, then Justin and Alper bought tickets for Europe, so they’ll be coming with us to Rome (and Venice and Paris and Madrid) in March
.
And then on the way home it was SNOWING!!! And sticking too! Awesomeness. Snow in the middle of the night, fresh, since no one’s awake to track through it… awesomeness….

Seriously? Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House? Most powerful woman in the history of the United States? And she knows about this internet meme?? And she’s 68?!?! I don’t know whether to be horrified or gleeful.
In another random occurence, we went skiing at Baker 1/1-1/4. Justin and Lawrence set up an ad-hoc network and played DotA on the car ride all the way up… hilarious, and amazing what technology can do these days. Later that night, in the middle of a song in Rockband 2, I started fumbling all the notes (like, worse than I was before). After getting very little sleep and staying up late the previous three nights, and driving for several hours straight, I simply crashed. I’ve never crashed so suddenly and obviously like that before. I couldn’t force myself, nor did I want to, to stay up another minute and not sleep (like I’m doing now). There was no “let’s have some fun!” vs “I’m tired,” there was simply the “I’m tired” and the “let’s have some fun!” side… didn’t want to have any more fun. I wonder if I ran out of ATP or something. I think I’m getting old.
My favorite thing about a nap is….
not having any obligations upon waking up, such as brushing teeth, going to the restroom, eating breakfast, needing to leave for work…. just get up, hop on the computer, and do whatever. That’s the life.
